On 1 November, my wife told me that a friend of hers had heard on the news that about 30 children in the UK who were "trick or treating" were killed by the people they were visiting. I was shocked and said I didn't believe it. Turns out the children who were killed were the poor Italian kids killed at school during an earthquake in south central Italy ... the friend is a non native English speaker and had connected a story on Radio 4 about Halloween in the UK with the story of the Italian earthquake, not having spotted the break between them.
